Frequently Asked Questions

This configuration uses a ductile iron pressure body with ASTM B62 / UNS C83600 bronze trim and a coating system selected for seawater exposure. It should not be described as a generic gray cast iron water or HVAC valve.

ASTM B62 covers UNS C83600 composition bronze castings used for valve components. For seawater duty, water chemistry, velocity, galvanic interaction and the complete wetted-material combination must still be reviewed.

No. This page describes a seawater-service configuration. Potable-water use requires separate review of lead-content limits, certification, coating and trim materials.

The valve is self-actuated by flow and reverse pressure. An optional lever and counterweight or hydraulic damper can be engineered to modify the closing response for the system.

Provide size, Class 125 or 250 rating, seawater analysis, temperature, flow velocity, maximum reverse head, installation orientation, FF flange drilling, coating system, trim details and closing-control requirements.

Product Overview

This is a seawater-service swing check valve with a ductile iron pressure body and ASTM B62 bronze trim. The hinged disc opens under forward flow and returns toward the seat when flow stops or reverses, protecting pumps and seawater piping from reverse flow.

ASTM B62 identifies UNS C83600 composition bronze, commonly known as 85-5-5-5 bronze, for cast components such as valves and fittings. In this product the bronze trim is paired with the ductile iron body for the specified seawater duty; it is not a generic cast iron, potable-water or HVAC configuration.

Seawater suitability depends on the complete material system. Confirm the internal and external coating, bronze wetted components, hinge pin, shaft, fasteners, gasket and seat materials, plus galvanic compatibility, cathodic-protection interfaces, seawater chemistry, temperature and flow velocity.

The valve is self-actuated. Where reverse-flow velocity or closure impact requires additional control, an optional lever and counterweight or hydraulic damper may be selected from the hydraulic duty and installation layout.

  • Ductile Iron Body: pressure-containing construction specified for the project.
  • ASTM B62 Bronze Trim: UNS C83600 wetted trim for the confirmed seawater configuration.
  • FF Flanged Ends: Class 125–250 connection arrangement.
  • Optional Closing Control: lever and counterweight or hydraulic damper when engineered.

Applications, Materials and Engineering Selection

Use the seawater analysis and complete project datasheet to confirm pressure rating, bronze trim, coating, flange drilling, closure control and galvanic compatibility.

Typical Applications

  • Seawater intake and discharge piping
  • Marine cooling-water and ballast-water systems
  • Coastal pumping stations and desalination utilities

Body, Trim and Coating

The specified configuration combines a ductile iron body with ASTM B62 / UNS C83600 bronze trim. Internal and external coating, fasteners, hinge components, seat and gasket materials must be selected as one seawater corrosion-control system.

Technical Points to Verify

  • Chloride level, temperature, velocity and solids
  • Galvanic coupling and cathodic-protection interfaces
  • FF flange class, drilling and installation orientation
  • Reverse head and optional closing-control settings

Procurement and Inspection Checklist

Select the valve from the complete seawater duty. Body, trim, coating and external corrosion-control measures must be reviewed together.

  • Service data: state NPS or DN, Class 125 or 250, seawater source and analysis, temperature, flow rate, velocity, solids and maximum reverse head.
  • Materials: confirm ductile iron grade, ASTM B62 / UNS C83600 trim components, hinge pin, shaft, fasteners, seat, gasket and material certificates.
  • Corrosion control: define internal and external coating, surface preparation, dry-film thickness, holiday testing and compatibility with any cathodic-protection system.
  • Installation: confirm FF flange drilling, flow direction, approved orientation, maintenance access and space for a lever, counterweight or hydraulic damper.
  • Inspection: request dimensional checks, coating records, free disc movement, shell and seat tests, plus functional checks of optional closing-control equipment.
